Ok, I'll admit it, I love to be organized. I believe everything has it's place and it's my job to find it! However being organized, within your own business and managing your time, is a whole other story. Sometimes, a day will go by and I'll get so much accomplished and other days, I can't remember what I did. Being your own boss is amazing but you also have to know how to keep yourself on track and most importantly on schedule. It took me awhile to find my own schedule but now that I have it down, I wanted to share my top 5 tips on how to stay organized and win the day!! Here goes...
1 - keep a running to do list: Each morning I open up my sticky notes and go over my running To Do list on my computer. This is a living document that gets updated, changed and modified every single day. I'll add new tasks, notes, things to do and check off which tasks have been completed. Also, I always move my completed tasks to my "done"sticky note because I like to keep a running list of what I actually got done.
2 - group same tasks together. Now that I know what I have to get done, I break up my tasks by category and schedule them to be done on the same day. One day can be for editing, the next shooting, networking, visiting clients, blogging, and so forth. For me, I've found that it's helpful to schedule similar tasks on the same day. I like this because I can focus on one type of task per day and the next day will be totally different. Love that!
3 - schedule each day with three must do tasks. After I've reviewed my to do list, meetings & appointments for the week, I schedule my top three tasks per day on my weekly calendar from Poketo. This little sticky calendar is seriously the best thing ever! It helps me to see what I need to get done each day and lets me create my weekly schedule. Once I've completed a task, I cross it off my list and move on to the next. Some people might prefer to keep it on their google calendar, but I need to write it out and see it in front of me. If I complete all three tasks, I've won the day! High five!
4 - schedule email & social media time. One of the biggest tasks is answering emails and updating social media (Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest). You'd be surprised how much time it takes to answer wedding inquires, vendor requests and to be honest, facebook can be an endless time suck. So, to keep myself on schedule, I allot a certain amount of time per day to answer emails (once in morning, once in the afternoon) and then I check into my business Facebook page & social media outlets afterwards. This keeps me in check, on schedule & very social!
5 - don't be too hard on yourself! We've all been there, the day gets away from you and you start to beat yourself up because you didn't get done what you wanted to and that's ok. Hey, it happens! Just start the next day with the tasks you didn't finish and move forward.
Even if this helps just one person, that's a win for me. Enjoy!
