happy friday + yummy treats!

Last week, I had a lunch date with my friend Cassie in Brooklyn. We ate lunch at the new Shake Shack and then walked down to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory by the Brooklyn Bridge. It was one of those days where you just sit, talk and laugh - a lot! I'm always on the lookout for locations and these are just perfect for a brooklyn engagement session. Just looking at these photos makes me realize that I need to go back again - soon. Soooo Yummy!

:: things i like :: blogstomp

Sometimes I feel as if I've been living under a rock because how could I have been so clueless before? Let me explain. Creating the photo layouts for my blog posts can be very time consuming. I found a few photoshop actions that help speed along the process but nothing compares to Blogstomp. It's an amazing application (or action) that allows you to setup your logo, rename files & configure your output settings of your blog in minutes. Yes, minutes people! I heard about the application from Jasmine Star during theFix. I downloaded the trial and after I took sometime to setup my preferred settings (watermark, width & sharpening), I "stomped" my latest wedding post in minutes. I was done in record time and I thought to myself, where has this been all my life? (see living under a rock comment above - ha!)

I purchased the full application for $49.00 and it's. worth. every. penny! It's seriously one of the best investments I've made. Soooooo, what are yo waiting for? Get yours here!

a foggy day in brooklyn

Last week, I went out with my camera and took a few photographs of the fog before it disappeared. This was my favorite image because you can barely make out the city in the back. Enjoy!

:: for the bride :: the first look

Today's for the bride is all about the First Look. What exactly is a first look? A first look is when the bride and groom decide to see each before the ceremony to take their portraits together. I know, there's an old saying that says it's bad luck to see each other before the ceremony but I'm here to say that it's not! It's really common now to see each other before your ceremony and most of couples choose to have one too. I absolutely love first looks and here are my top 5 tips why:

1 - Lots of photographs! A first look gives you about an hour or more to take your wedding portraits together. The moment you see each other for the first time is still just as amazing and intimate as if you were walking down the aisle. It's truly amazing!

2 - A lot of alone time! It's your big day and you're probably a little nervous, right? One of the best benefits of choosing to do a first look is that you'll be able to connect privately with each other before you walk down the aisle. For most weddings, it will might be the only time you are both alone together. Having the chance to take a deep breath, enjoy the moment and relax for a little bit before saying your vows.

3 - No rushing around. Having time scheduled for a first look also means no rushing around from location to location. It's nice to have a more of time for your photos and visit another location without worrying too much about the clock.

4 - More time with your guests! Worried that you're going to miss your cocktail hour because you have to take your portraits? With a first look, you've already taken all of your bridal portraits and most likely family photos so you'll be able to enjoy your cocktail hour. (side note: If it's almost sunset, I'm probably going to borrow you for just a few minutes to get some amazing photos at the most beautiful time of day.)

5 - Lots more photos of you together! This is by far one of the best benefits to choosing a first look. You will have SO many more photographs of you two together vs. not having a first look. These are the photos you are going to decorate your home with and cherish forever. It's a win-win in my book!

A first look is something that you'll have to schedule into your day with your wedding photographer and planner (if you have one!) but I think having the extra time to take your wedding portraits is well worth it. Happy planning!

:: things i like :: manfrotto 190XDB tripod

When I upgraded my tripod head a few months ago, I also had to upgrade my tripod body so I could use my new head. (of course!) Luckily, I found out that Adorama was hosting a Manfrotto tripod trade-in event at their store the very next weekend. What are the odds? So, I brought in my trusty tripod, spoke to the helpful Manfrotto rep and upgraded to awesome the Manfrotto 190XDB model. Boy, do I love it!

Arthur Ashe Stadium Engagement Session. Brooklyn Engagement Photographer

It's not everyday that your dreams come true but a few weeks ago, a big dream came to life for my amazing bride and groom at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Marlo and Jamie love tennis. They live, breathe, eat, sleep, play and teach tennis so when I suggested a tennis themed engagement session, they were game. Then, something amazing happened. A few days before our session, we got Arthur Ashe Stadium! (insert squeals of glee!) We had so much fun in the stadium before heading over to the World's Fair pavilion for a few photographs in front of the Globe. It was an amazing day in March for several reasons but most importantly, for Marlo & Jamie. These are images they'll have forever and I'm so happy I could be apart of it. Can't wait till their wedding in September. Enjoy!

:: for the groom :: what to wear on your engagement session

Today's for the groom is all about the men! Last week, I posted some helpful tips for couples wondering what to wear for their engagement sessions. I created an inspiration board for the ladies and thought I'd help the men get ready for their close up as well. Here we go...

Some tips: Wear clothes and shoes that are flattering and comfortable but remember to dress it up a bit. A crisp clean shirt with a bow tie will really bring some charm to your photos. Don't like ties? That's ok maybe just a new shirt to make you feel special. Don't forget to accessorize! You might think accessories are just for the ladies but guys have a lot of great choices too. Your belt, watch, glasses and shoes are great ways to tie your outfit together. Remember to keep colors and patterns in the same tones and hues as your wife-to-be's outfit. Being coordinated but not "matchy-matchy" (you're not twins!) is helpful to set the tone of your photos.

Causal vs. Dressy... it's up you and your location! Are you going to be on the beach or in the city? Are you having a formal wedding but want to be more relaxed in your session? These are all things that should be discussed with your photographer prior to your session. Come up with a plan, figure out your outfits and remember to just have fun!

No.1 J.Crew secret wash lightweight solid shirt in stormy sea. No.2 Classic Spec's Exeter glasses in carbon black. No.3 Fossil baldwin belt in tan No.4 484 slim-fit jeans in raw selvedge denim from j.crew No.5 bayly glen plaid bow tie from j.crew No.6 tan oxfords from rush by gordon rush

:: for the bride :: what to wear on your engagement session

I absolutely love engagement sessions! It's such a great way to spend time with the bride and groom before their wedding day. We get to hang out and have fun while taking pictures. A popular question is "What should I wear for our pictures?" and I always say "whatever makes you smile!". To look your best and to be relaxed, you have to be comfortable with what you are wearing. I always suggest wearing your favorite outfit or piece of jewelry that makes your heart race but whatever you wear, it should be totally you not what you think you should wear.

Some tips: Dressing in coordinating and complementary colors with your fiancĂ© will help tie the photos together. I'm not talking "matchy-matchy" but just similar styles (casual vs. dressy) will help bring the session together. Staying away from bold and tiny patterns, stripes, baggy clothing, logo's is also a good rule of thumb but if you wear stripes everyday (ahem, me!) why not capture that in your photographs? It really depends on you and your style.

Being confident equals great photographs. There's nothing to it and just to help you visualize, I've put together a inspiration board for you! Enjoy....

No.1 Wear your favorite dress, like this one from kate spade new york, and you'll instantly feel pretty. No.2 A statement piece or just a sparkly stunner will dress up any outfit! Love this one from Elva Fields. No.3 A bright fun belt (like this one from j.crew) adds another layer to your outfit and a pop of color to your photos. No.4 Flats love your feet and when you're walking around for a few hours, they'll thank you! No. 5 A fun skirt and pretty shirt that flatter is always the best outfit!
